Description: Did a collaborative art project by writing “Scribble” really big on small pieces of paper and then dividing them up amongst the sixth graders. I had them write some things about themselves on the back if they wanted to. On the front they had to take the lines that were already there on the paper and make it into something else using those lines as inspiration. After that, we thought of some questions we wanted to answer that they had about art. Questions like, “Who invented paint?” and “how are cartoons part of art?” I gave them some more time to work on their drawings, and they asked questions about me, what my favorite band was, why I decided to teach art, etc. Then we delved into altered books. They each got a book and were told they are able to do whatever they want with it, as long as they were following classroom rules. They responded very well to this activity. We brainstormed about what they could do with their books, and they come up with things like coloring the sides of the books, changing the title, cutting into the pages to create a place to store things, etc. They didn't want to clean up at the end.

What went well:

kids really liked altered books

I think I had good control of the classroom

I think I guided them into some meaningful discussion

I think I was approachable and made them feel comfortable around me

I think we got to know each other better

What could have gone better:

I forgot to take pictures of what we discussed on the board

We should have checked the glues beforehand to make sure they were working

Could have been more efficient getting the materials to students
